In between some amazing sessions at WriteOnCon I had to keep sneaking out to the garden to harvest the vegetables that have pretty much taken over our lives.
On one of my harvesting forays I saw some brown blurry movement. At first I thought it was just the sun and shadows playing tricks on me. Something kept sneaking into my line of sight and disappearing.
I sat down in a chair in front of our greenhouse and this little munchkin popped out from under one of the raised beds.
He proceeded to dart in and out of cover for about a half hour. Luckily for me, WriteOnCon has great archives so I didn’t have to worry about missing something while I hung with the weasel.
I got a few fleeting photos. He was a fast little sucker. Cute, too.
The little guy made my day, but WriteOnCon made my week. A big thank you to Jamie Harrington, Elana Johnson, Casey McCormick, Shannon Messenger, Lisa & Laura Roecker and Jennifer Stayrook for working the magic that made it all happen.
All the presentations are archived on the WriteOnCon website. It is a great resource for writers. I’m not even going to try to pick a favorite, or most helpful, post or vlog or live chat. They were all very high quality, professional, fun and thought provoking.
Today I’m heading out on a twenty mile run with a friend in preparation for the Equinox Marathon. We both have some knee issues limiting us, but our running mantra is: Slow miles are better than no miles.
Happy writing, and have a great weekend!
Your garden looks great Paul despite the furry friends. I didn’t follow with Write Con as I thought it was for YA writers mostly–was I wrong? Enjoy your run–your loooooong run!
Hi Terri, there are definitely things that any writer, not just YA/MG/PB, could benefit from in the WriteOnCon archives. A couple of presentations that come to mind are posts by Kendra Levin on revision and Mandy Hubbard on character, but there are many more as well. Thanks for stopping by.
1.) I like furry four-legged animals. Never seen a weasel, though!
2.) I need to be revising.
3.) You make a 20-mile run sound like no big deal. Sheesh. Husband and I have a 30 mile bike ride tomorrow. Training for MS150. It’ll be slow. But like you said, slow miles are better than no miles!
GO GIT IT! =)
Hi Sarah,
Good luck on your bike-ride and on your revisions!
And, a twenty mile run is a big deal to me but I’m just going to go do it. And it’s great to have a friend to run with. It’ll be like having a four hour visit.
Well, literally, have to run now:-)
What a cute little guy. Oh, man, so SWEET!
Have a great run, Paul. Drink lots of water, my friend. 🙂
And your garden looks great. Ours brought lots of yummy veggies, too. Plus, our strawberries, grapes, and blueberries are all in the freezer. Mmmmm
WriteOnCon was wonderful. I’ll be back next year, that’s for sure.
The only weasels I see are the ones on people’s shoulders who take them out for a “walk.”
WriteOnCon was amazing. I loved that I could catch up on my own time, late at night or early in the morning, so it was low pressure. I know it’s not supposed to mimic a real conference, but I felt that except for break-out and one-on-one sessions, it was just as informative as some in-person conferences I attended.
I love your mantra! That’s pretty much good for everything in life, isn’t it?
And a weasel! I’ve never seen one of those! He’s kinda cute!
I really enjoyed WriteOnCon. I’m going to go back and read a lot of the static offerings, but I tried to participate in all the live events and most were really excellent. I think what those organizers and presenters managed to do was pretty darn fabulous!
Green beans, zucchini, cucumber, tomatoes, and green peppers have taken over our lives here. It’s refreshing to have sinner with veggies you hand-picked three hours earlier, BUT it sucks to sit on a stool at four in the afternoon and pick them when it’s 90* out and the 80* Lake Michigan is beckoning you. Don’t consider this a rant…it’s more like a complaint for a recently realized privileged person.
I want to jump in the Lake and feel the rise and fall of the waves.
Love that phrase btw: “recently realized privileged person.”
I LOVE that you actually had time to go outside and garden!
I seriously don’t even think I saw the sun all three days–but it was totally worth it!
Thanks for being a part of writeoncon!
Oh, I’d love to have a garden take over my life. Yours looks lush and thriving. I saw a weasel run through a garden I had years ago. I was amazed to see how fast it was and how it’s body moved almost like an inch-worm’s.
Still smiling over WriteOnCon. How lucky are we all to get to participate in that?
Can I use that mantra for writing as well? Slow revision is better than no revision? Oh, and my running miles were very slow this am too. So glad you are able to clock in big miles even with knee issues. Whenever I get that in my head, (big miles), my shins SCREAM at me. But maybe if I found a long dirt expanse–or did my current trail route a number of times…
Still experiencing my writeoncon high…
I wasn’t able to participate as much as I would’ve liked in WriteOnCon, but I did manage to squeeze in some informative reads…and even make a few comments.
From what I participated in, the whole things was a masterpiece in planning and work.
What a beautiful garden. And cute weasel! My kids and I saw a sea otter this afternoon at the beach. Adorable!
Thank goodness for the archives. It was a crazy-busy week for me and my family, so I look forward to digging through presentations.
Good luck with the run. Great mantra!
That weasel was pretty cute. Hopefully he doesn’t wreak too much havoc in the garden. I still have quite a bit of Write On Con archives to go through, but from what I have seen it was pretty awesome and hopefully it will become an annual event!
